Their or its ?

Hello everyone ! In the Funky Friday #11 there is this sentence : "Everyone must choose their own path" Why "their" and not "its" ? I used to think that "their" was plural...

  • Hello Annie. Anyhow it wouldn't be 'its' because 'its' refers to a thing whereas everyone stands for every person. Courteous English people use 'their' instead of 'his' that could upset those who fight against sex discrimination. Why a plural for that "their"? Everyone is grammatically singular but refers to several persons, so "everyone must choose their own path". C U
