English Grammar

Episode to kill a Texas mountain bear

Hello,
" By late 1992, after spending just six months working for the neurology department Dr Head cold had become one of the most respected scientists in California."
In this sentence, is it possible to put Has become instead of Had become.
In my mind he is still considered as one of the best. So still a connexion with nowadays.
Can you help me about that point and why not give me other examples, please.
Have a good day and thank you for your answers.

  • Error....To my mind .
  • "By late 1992" indicates the action ("become ... ") was already finished, thus "had". I guess "has" is not a good choice as his reputation may have deteriorated in the time since late 1992.
