For me, it doesn't have to be in Present tense.
These days is plural, it means "to day, and yesterday..." at least 2 days.
Therefore, may be in English you consider 2 ,3 days ago as present tense, but not in French.
In French:" ces jours ci, Icarus a utilisé..."
