I forgot or I have forgotten

Help! I never know when to use this:
I forgot my password! or I have forgotten my password;

I have heard that it was a question of TIME, the action is finished or not.
Well, well, well, I understand nothing,
PLEASE, explain !

    yes, it is a question of TIME.

    I forgot my password = today, last week, last year/century perhaps...

    I have forgotten my password =suggests more recently, including today or in a near time period.

    Assez subtil!
    n.b. I've forgotten....is the more usual way to say it.

    In reality, either expression would work with a sympathetic speaker/listener...of which there are many!
