When you write for an exercise "You've seen this before" shouldn't you say instead, using the preterit "You saw this before" as it relate to an exercise in the past .

Not knowing the context, I think that both forms work for this sentence- the 'seen' sets the time as being in the past, perhaps continously, the 'saw' puts it in the past as a one-off event....perhaps...
