can and could

Hello;
I have any question:
The verb can and could no llevan despues el infinitivo sin to, pero en la escena The bird of a Corporation, hay la frase: "She ran as fast as she could to inform Polly", yo creo que no está bien, yo puse to be able to inform, y me han dicho que está mal. I don't understand.
thanks.

  • Hello sauc.

    You have a question.

    I presume the scene which is at stake is about "the BIRTH of a corporation".
    bird: animal covered with feathers which most often can fly.
    birth: the fact of a new individual coming to life.

    <She ran as fast as she could> <to inform Polly>.
    The sentence doesn't mean "she could inform Polly".
    It means:
    She ran as fast as she could run (omitted) to inform Polly.
    She ran as fast as she could (run) in order to inform Polly.
    She ran as fast as she could (run) with the purpose of informing Polly.

    Hope it will help.
