English Grammar

handsome - more handsome or handsomer???

In my today english workout the comparative form "handsomer" was corrected to "more handsome". On the website of Merriam the word "handsomer" does exist. http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/handsomer
Which form is actually correct? Is "handsomer" just obsolete??
Thanks for your help in advance!

You can find several comments and a possible answer to this question on this very Forum, under the heading vocabulary. I agree with you: it's a grammar question but it often happens on this Forum as it isn't "supervised", which has good and bad repercussions!
