English Vocabulary

fusion or merger

Is there a difference between a merger between two institutions and a fusion of them? Or is the fusion "a false friend" in this case?

  • I never heard or read that companies had made a "fusion". In economic field, companies are said merging.
But political or cultural parties could be the object of a fusion.
The same for ideas. ex. In USA a fusion of religious and political ideas often can be noticed.

  • You may find more on "merger" and "consolidation" under a headline posted by Sandy and answered by myself on 17 & 18 dec. 2008. Go to the top of the second page of the present column.
