English Vocabulary

bill board

I'm very astonished to read that a bill board is not at all a small wooden board where the waiters of a pub with local flavor may write down the number of drinks the guest consumes and finally add the prices to get the total bill.

  • It comes as no surprise to me that you be astonished, St. Johann. I guess you spend a lot of time in pubs. But the word bill has so many different meanings that it plays a trick to more than one.

  • Dear St. Johann,
since you know, that a bill-board is not the place where the bill will be produced, what do you want to know then?

A billboard is that huge board you may find roadside or at a house wall in town, with advertisement of products like Coca-Cola, Volkswagen or McDonalds.
