When strolling the streets of Munich recently I could see male citizens, men as boys, wearing weird leather shorts with suspenders. It's seems it's the way they feel real Bavarians.
In German, Dutch... leder is leather; and a hose, a trouser.
A "lederhosen" is a traditional garment, a piece of apparel in Bavaria, a Southern part of Germany). That is, pants/trousers, also shorts, made of leather and usually equipped with suspenders.
In former times, such pants of leather were used for every day work, because the material is quite resistent. For holidays and special occasions men wore embellished "lederhosen", which were adorned ornaments.
