English Vocabulary

Learning new vocabulary in an amusing way

Hello everyone!
This is a game and its purpose is to make each word shorter by taking away one letter at a time (keeping the remaining letters in their original order) to form a new word.
Do this as many times as you can, each time forming a new word as a letter is deleted.

Example
* PLATE: LATE - ATE - AT A -

1 STAND
2 WAIST
3 SNORE
4 THINK
5 PAINT
6 BOARD
7 FRIEND

I hope you like it.
Have a lovely time!

  • 1 Stand: Sand-and-an-a

  • Hello!

    That's a great idea !

But, I have a question : do you choice the words at random??
Because I would like others examples.

    Thanks ;)
  • Sunflowers are blooming in this sunny (?) July.
I add here a question coming along with Sunflower's game in a reversal direction.

WHICH 7 LETTER WORD COMES LONGER WHEN ITS THIRD LETTER IS REMOVED?

The answer could be Sunflower himself or herself (?) as long as he or she (?) hasn't written for ages. He or she (?) could be a LOUNGER.
A LOUNGER is someone as lazy as to rest lying lazily on a LOUNGER (bed used for sunbathing) somewhere on a July sunny beach.

Please note that there is not any lounger in the 'GymGlish users and visitors lounge'. Would it be one, he or she (?) would no longer live, turning right into a LONGER status, even if he or she'd be longing for being a lounger.
  • I wonder whether it wouldn't be still more effective in order to acquire an active vocabulary to use the words coming out of the successive cuttings off by putting them into phrases.
    For instance
slash -> sales slash the prices by 30%.
lash -> the jockey keeps lashing his horse all the race long.
ash -> the fag ends as ashes in the ashbin.
as -> much as I'd like to, I can't help you.
a -> area starts as it ends with an a.
  • thank you sartoz,it's a good discovery.
stand:let's stand shoulders for that new game
sand:you want to walk on sand?,join me to the beach
and:you and me ,we gonna make it
    an:an extraordinary research,flo
    a :once upon a time,(to begin a story)
  • Let's take up the game set up by Sunflower in the opposite direction.
Start with one letter and add ONE AND ONLY ONE letter at a time.
    Anagrams are permitted.
We should endeavour to build up the longest possible word.
    I'll start with a.
Whoever can manage to make a longer word is invited to write down the suite hereafter.

a at fat frat draft farted drafted 7
a am mad made amend demand demands 7
a ad rat rate treat threat threats shatters 8

Just a pastime, not worse than playing cards.
Of course there is better to do in order to go forward with our English.
